Retail changes staff faster than any property type we cover, and every departure leaves a key nobody can account for.
Two things drive lock work in retail: units change hands and staff change constantly. Both leave keys in circulation, and on a standard keyway a returned key proves nothing because copies can be cut at any counter for a few dollars.
The register matters more than the cylinder here. A unit that knows which keys exist can handle a departure with a phone call. A unit that does not ends up rekeying everything, every time, or quietly deciding not to worry about it.

Where turnover is high, put group-use doors on keypads or readers. Revoking a credential or changing a code takes minutes at no cost, whereas a mechanical key issued and not returned is a permanent unknown.
